UK Privacy Regulator Imposes £14.47 Million Fine on Reddit
The United Kingdom’s data protection regulator has fined social media platform Reddit £14.47 million ($19.6 million) after finding that the company failed to adequately protect children’s personal data and did not implement sufficient age-verification safeguards.
The penalty was issued by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) following an investigation into how the platform processed personal data belonging to underage users.
Investigation Reveals Weak Age-Verification Controls
According to the regulator, Reddit did not deploy strong mechanisms to determine whether users accessing its platform were minors.
As a result, children were able to access the service and have their personal data processed without the protections required under UK data protection laws.
The ICO stated that online platforms that process children’s information must implement stronger safeguards to ensure minors are protected from potential privacy risks.
Failure to Meet Data Protection Standards
The investigation found that Reddit lacked adequate systems designed to prevent children from accessing areas of the platform that may expose them to privacy risks.
Regulators emphasized that companies operating digital platforms must take additional steps to ensure compliance with laws designed to protect children online.
Organizations that collect or process children’s personal data are required to implement strict controls and safeguards under the UK’s data protection framework.
Growing Global Pressure on Tech Platforms
Regulatory authorities across Europe and the United Kingdom have increased scrutiny of how technology companies handle children’s personal data.
Several large technology platforms have recently faced enforcement actions and significant fines for failing to meet privacy and cybersecurity compliance standards.
Experts say the enforcement action highlights the growing pressure on social media companies to strengthen privacy protection, cybersecurity safeguards, and age-verification systems.
Reddit Responds to the Enforcement Action
Reddit said it is reviewing the regulator’s findings and remains committed to improving safety and privacy protections for its users.
The company added that it continues investing in tools and systems designed to strengthen user protection and ensure compliance with evolving privacy regulations.
